Color Gem Grading Overview
Our system is no better than other systems that are based on objectivity
and use scientific terms to describe a gem's appearance. And unless
all parties understand the
terms and system used, it is little better than the snake oil approach
used to romance potential customers.
Elements of Our Gem Grading System
- Hue/color & color description system
- Saturation designator
- Tone designator
- Composite of saturation and tone
- Cut/proportion evaluation
- Estimate % of brilliance/internal luster
- Clarity/color zoning
- Determination of overall grade
Our system is available to all and may be distributed and displayed freely so long as:
- It is distributed or displayed in its entirety

We welcome constructive criticism of the system as well as suggestions for improving it.
We only wish that the truly influential instutions that perpetuate industry standards would freely share the systems they have already developed. Not only would the colored gem industry be closer to a universal grading system, but the consumer would be able to make better gem buying decisions.
Even if you don't already have a ruby or sapphire or spinel and don't want to buy one until you have gained more knowledge, laying your hands on a gem is easier than you might think.
Indicate to people that you\'re studying gem grading and off come rings, jewelry boxes fly open and all sorts of synthetic and real gems seem to materialize as if by magic.
But be warned! Telling someone how poorly cut or how heavily included a treasured gemstone is can strain friendships.
