Chances are you have already decided on a goldsmith or jeweler to make your setting and wedding bands. They will be excellent sources for referrals for diamond cutters.
Don't consider having the diamond set without at least a repolish. Abraded facet junction are a dead giveaway that the diamond has been previously owned.
A skilled cutter will be able to polish out those abrasions and scratches without changing the carat weight significantly.
Some characteristics that will make a diamond re cut significantly smaller are chips and cracks.
- Chipped girdle - very significant. If not re fashioned, this can compromise the diamond's integrity. To maintain correct proportions, the diamond will re cut smaller.
- Chipped culet - another strong negative. There are several options for addressing this problem
- Recutting to either a point of a tiny culet may change the diamond's proportions and alter the brilliance
- Enlarging the culet - maintains the diamond's spread, but if the culet is too large it can change the look of the diamond
Note: a larger culet can actually have a positive effect for stones of inferior color, often changing them a color grade or more. - Chip on facet or junction - means recutting and reduction in size and weight
Okay, I know there are folks out there who are more skilled at this than I am. Share your tips. I'll include them here with attributes.
